He began his formal education at Sedberg School in Yorkshire. He later went to Oxford to study history and then to London to study anthropology.

Next, he became a lecturer and professor of anthropology at the University of Cambridge. In 1986 he was introduced as a Fellow of the British Academy. Although he has conducted extensive field research in several regions of the globe, his most distinctive work is considered to be on the Gurung people of Nepal.
