Alan Alda is an Emmy-winning American actor, director and screenwriter. He played “Captain Hawkeye Pierce” on the CBS series M*A*S*H and “Arnold Vinick” on the NBC series “The West Wing.” His film credits include Crime and Misdemeanor (1989) and The Pilot (2004). Alda was born on January 28, 1936 in the Bronx, New York, as Alfonso Joseph Dabruzzo. His father, Robert Alda, is an actor/singer, and his mother, Joan Brown, is a former Miss New York. He has a younger brother, Anthony, who is also an actor. In 2009, he died of liver cirrhosis at the age of 52. Alda attended Archbishop Stepinac High School and then Fordham University. He graduated in 1956 with a BA in English.

Alda spent six months in the U.S. Army Reserve before starting full-time acting. He gained early exposure as a member of the Compass Players comedy troupe and later as a member of the Cleveland Play House. His Broadway debut was “Only in America” in 1959. Other early performances include Purlie Victorious, Fair Game for Lovers and The Owl and the Pussycat. He was nominated for a Tony Award for his roles in “The Apple Tree,” “Jack’s Woman,” and “Glen Gary Glen Rose.”
Alda made her feature film debut in “Days of the Past” (1963). He then played “George Plimpton” in the sports comedy “Paper Lion” (1968). The role earned him a Golden Globe Rising Star of the Year nomination. Other early films include Jenny (1970) with Marlo Thomas, Same Time Next Year (1978) with Ellen Burstyn and The Four Seasons (1981) with Carol Burnett. Alda played “Captain Hawkeye Pierce” in the comedy-drama series M*A*S*H. It aired on CBS from September 1972 to February 1983 for 11 seasons. The series has earned him several accolades, including 3 Primetime Emmy Awards, for outstanding writing, directing and leading actor in a comedy series.
Alda starred alongside Caroline Aaron in the film Crime and Misdemeanor (1989). It was produced by Robert Greenhart and directed by Woody Allen. He appeared again with Allen in Manhattan Murder Mystery (1993). Alda’s other films include The Aviator (2004) with Leonardo DiCaprio, Tower Heist (2011) with Ben Stiller and Matt Charman (Matt Charman) Bridge of Spies (2015). Alda hosted Frontiers in Science on PBS from 1993 to 2007. He played “Arnold Vinick” in seasons 6 and 7 of NBC’s West Wing (2004-06). He won an Emmy for Best Supporting Actor for his performance. His TV credits also include The Big C and The Blacklist. In 1994, Alda was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame.
