Ella Mai is too interested in music and was admitted to a performing arts school since she was a child.
At the age of 12, her family moved to New York City and settled in Jamaica, Queens. She attended Queens Teaching High School in Glen Oaks. Ella Mai immediately experienced a culture shock. Because of her British accent, she is particularly picky. At the age of 17, after graduation, she moved back to London to continue her studies at the British and Irish Schools of Modern Music. Although she did not pass the audition, it marked her first step towards greater success.
Profession
In 2015, Ella Mai announced her first project. She uploaded a 4 single EP called “Trouble” on the music platform SoundCloud. Although these tracks performed quite well, they did not bring her fame. She started posting clips and covers of songs by famous artists on her Instagram page. She uploaded covers of Chris Brown, Fetty Wap, and 2pac. After uploading the cover of Fetty Wap’s hit single “679”, she was noticed by American record producer DJ Mustard. In January 2016, DJ Mustard signed her to his 10 Summer Label, and the two began to collaborate.
Under the leadership of her new manager, Ella Mai released a trilogy EP. The first “Time” was released in 2016 and featured the famous single “She Don’t” by Ty Dolla Sign. The second EP “Change” released in the same year performed well in business. Her third EP “Ready” was aired on TV in early 2017. The project features her breakthrough single “Boo’d Up”. Despite a slow start, this song eventually gained attention and became her first top 10 song in the United States. This single ranked No. 5 on the Billboard Top 100 Singles Chart in the United States.
While Ella Mai was successful, she also participated in other activities. She toured with Kehlani on her SweetSexySavage world tour and with Bruno Mars on his 24K Magic tour. Therefore, as her music and image are shown to a global audience, her popularity has grown exponentially. The exposure strengthened her hit single; “Boo’d Up” reached the platinum chart in June 2018.
