Elizabeth is a long-term member of the Republican Party. She has served in the presidential administrations of Ronald Reagan and George HW Bush. She served as a senator from 2003 to 2009, director of the Federal Trade Commission from 1973 to 1979, secretary of transportation from 1983 to 1987, and secretary of labor from 1989 to 1990.
She was born on July 29, 1936 in Salisbury, North Carolina, her original name is Mary Elizabeth Alexander Hanford Dole. Dole graduated from Duke University and Harvard Law School, ran for Kennedy-Johnson presidential candidate in 1960, and then continued to work at the White House during Lyndon Johnson’s later years in office.
She then became Secretary of Transportation under Ronald Reagan and Secretary of Labor under George HW Bush, and then head of the American Red Cross.
In the six years from 2003 to 2009, she continued to join the U.S. Senate and became the first female senator to represent North Carolina. As an avid Republican member, she is also the former chairman of the National Republican Senate Committee.
