Elie Wiesel is a Romanian-born American writer, activist, and educator. He is a Holocaust survivor and Nobel Peace Prize winner. Eliezer Wiesel was born to parents Sarah and Shlomo on September 30, 1928 in Sighet, Romania. He has three siblings, Beatrice, Hilda and Chippola. Wiesel and his family were deported to the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in Poland in 1944. He was later sent to the Buna Werke labour camp, where he was forced to work in inhumane conditions. Wiesel lost his parents and one of his sisters during the Holocaust. Their camp was liberated by the United States in April 1945.

Wiesel studied French and writing at the Sorbonne University in France from 1948 to 1951. He later worked as a reporter for several French and Israeli newspapers. French Nobel laureate “François Mauriac” encouraged him to write about his Holocaust experience. Wiesel published the book in Yiddish in 1955, and the world would remain silent. The book was translated into English as “Night” and published in 1960. Several other translations have appeared since then. The novel “Dawn” was published in 1961, and “Day” was published in 1962.
Wiesel immigrated to the United States in 1955 and became a U.S. citizen in 1963. Some of his bestsellers include The Forest Gate (1966), The Oath (1973), and All Rivers Run to the Sea (1995). He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1992. A political activist, Wiesel has spoken out for injustices in countries such as South Africa, Bosnia and Cambodia. He has also served as a professor at the City University of New York and Boston University.
