Eliezer Wiesel, born in 1928 in Sighet, Malamatil, Romania, is the author of 57 books and a Holocaust survivor. In 1944, Jews living in Sighet were brought to Auschwitz-Birkenau by German troops, including Wiesel and his entire family.
The German had his prisoner number A-7713 tattooed on his left arm. Wiesel and his father were separated from his mother and three sisters and were sent to work at Auschwitz III-Monowitz. Wiesel’s father was killed weeks before the release of prisoners by the US Third Army on April 11, 1945. After the war, Wiesel started working as a journalist and put his Hebrew skills to good use as a translator. It took Wiesel nearly a decade to begin writing about his experiences with the Holocaust, though he eventually wrote “The World Remains Silent” in Yiddish. It totaled about 900 pages and was later shortened to “La Nuit” in French and “Night” in English. The book has since become a New York Times bestseller, selling more than 6 million copies in the United States alone. Wiesel became a U.S. citizen in the mid-1950s and went on to write numerous books. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986 for his work to end racism and violence. He is also a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Congressional Gold Medal, the Legion of Honor, and is a Commander of the Order of the British Empire. Wiesel is a political activist who advocates for causes in support of Israel, victims of apartheid in South Africa and an end to violence in Darfur. In 2006, he returned to Auschwitz as part of “The Oprah Winfrey Show.” Wiesel has since taught at various universities, including Boston University, the City University of New York, and Yale University. He and his wife Marion founded the Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity.
