Edward Snowden is an American computer programmer, former CIA employee and former U.S. government subcontractor. He is best known for leaking classified information about the surveillance activities of the National Security Agency (NSA) in 2013. Edward Joseph Snowden was born on June 21, 1983 in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. His father, Lonnie, was a former Coast Guard officer, and his mother, Elizabeth, worked in federal court in Maryland. His sister Jessica is a lawyer. Snowden attended Arundel High School in Gambrils, Maryland. He dropped out but completed his GED. Snowden later studied computing at Anne Arundel Community College. In 2004, he served briefly in the U.S. Army Reserve.

Snowden worked as a security guard at the Center for Advanced Studies in Language at the University of Maryland in 2005. The research facility is affiliated with the NSA. The following year, Snowden got a job at the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). In 2007, he worked in Geneva, Switzerland as a cybersecurity technician. Snowden cut ties with the CIA and joined the NSA in 2009. There, he worked as a contractor for technology consultancies Dell and Booz Allen Hamilton. During his tenure, he collected secret documents related to the NSA’s domestic surveillance activities.
Snowden took leave and flew to Hong Kong on May 20, 2013. He met and shared classified NSA documents with Guardian reporter and filmmaker Laura Poitras. This includes information about the data mining program PRISM. Snowden was charged with espionage by the United States on June 14, 2013. So he flew from Hong Kong, China to Moscow, Russia. He spent a month in the transit zone before being granted a one-year asylum. He was granted a 3-year residence permit in August 2014.
