Edward Albee is a Pulitzer Prize-winning American playwright. His hits include Zoo Stories and Who’s Afraid of the Virginia Wolves? Albee was born Edward Harvey on March 12, 1928, in Washington, D.C., to Louise Harvey and adoptive parents Francis and Reed Albee. Adoptive families inherit huge wealth from their juggling ancestors. Albee attended Lawrenceville School in New Jersey, followed by Choate School in Connecticut. He also briefly studied at Valley Forge Military Academy and Trinity College.

Albee worked many odd jobs before working as a playwright. His 1959 plays include Zoo Story, American Dream, The Death of Bessie Smith and The Sandbox. Albee rose to fame with his 1962 Broadway debut, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? The show won a Tony Award for Best Screenplay. It was used in the 1966 film starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.

Albee won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for “The Delicate Balance” (1967), “Seascape” (1975) and “Three Tall Women” (1994). Other notable plays include The Man with Three Arms and The Ballad of the Sad Cafe. Albee was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 1999. He is also the recipient of the Tony Lifetime Achievement Award and the National Medal of Arts. He is the founder of the Edward F. Albee Foundation established in 1967.

Edward Albee passed away on September 16, 2016 at the age of 88. There is no official cause of death report. However, he has diabetes. Albi is openly gay. His long-term partner “Jonathan Thomas” died of cancer in 2005. He has previously dated William Flanagan and Terence McNally.
