In the 1950s, he helped his father, Sidney, use the proceeds of the family’s Boston shoe business to buy real estate in Florida. Some properties in Florida and Indianapolis are still owned and maintained by Ed. In 1962, his father also bought Miami-based WSVN Channel 7 (an NBC affiliate) for $3.4 million. As a result, Ansin had the opportunity to become Executive Vice President of Sunbeam Television, the television holding company. In 1971, following the death of his father, he became president of Sunbeam. The station, which still operates as a Fox affiliate, first practiced a “if it bleeds, it would lead” style of television news, focusing on crime and similar consumer-interest stories.
