Martinez was born in New York City on January 2, 1963, and was the designated hitter and third baseman for the Seattle Mariners throughout his 18-year career in Major League Baseball, where he received the “Gar” ” and the nickname “Papi”.

Martinez originally signed a minor league contract with the Seattle Mariners on December 19, 1982. He rose through the Mariners’ minor league ranks, spending brief spells with the Calgary Artillery and Chattanooga Lookout before officially entering the majors on September 12, 1987.
