Martinez originally signed a minor league contract with the Seattle Mariners on December 19, 1982. He rose through the Mariners’ minor league ranks, spending brief spells with the Calgary Artillery and Chattanooga Lookout before officially entering the majors on September 12, 1987. In 1990, Martinez finally became a regular on the team’s lineup. Mariners, after he replaced Jim Presley at third base. This was the start of his prestigious career as third baseman, during which he won the 1992 American League Batting Award. He was fully designated as a hitter for the 1995 season.
