Bergen received an honorary Oscar in 1938 for his outstanding comedic writing, Charlie McCarthy. In 1979, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Screen Actors Guild and has stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in film, television and radio. Edgar Bergen died of kidney disease on September 30, 1978 at the age of 75.
