He is best known for hosting the television variety series The Ed Sullivan Show, formerly The Toast of the Town, from 1948 to 1971. The series set a record for the longest-running variety show in U.S. broadcast history. He has been a columnist for the New York Daily News and the Chicago Tribute to the New York News Syndicate. Sullivan showcased rock and roll as well as jazz, theatre and classical music. He has appeared on over 1,000 episodes of The Ed Sullivan Show and served as executive producer. Sullivan received a Golden Globe Award for television achievement in 1959 and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6101 Hollywood Boulevard in 1960. Ed Sullivan died of esophageal cancer on October 13, 1974 at the age of 73.
