Duke Kahanamoku is a Hawaiian swimmer, surfer, actor and sheriff. He is a five-time Olympic champion and contributed to the popularization of mainstream surfing in the United States. Kahanamoku was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on August 24, 1890. He has eight siblings, and his father “Duke Harap” is a policeman. He grew up in Waikiki, where he attended Kaahumanu School and then Kamehameha School.

Kahanamoku spent a lot of time developing his swimming and surfing skills at Waikiki Beach. In 1911, he broke the 100-meter freestyle record with an amazing time of 55.4 seconds. Kahanamoku participated in the Olympic Games for the first time in 1912. He won gold medals in the 100m freestyle and 4×200m freestyle relay. Subsequently, he won two gold medals at the 1920 Olympics and another gold medal in 1924. Kahanamoku was inducted into the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame in 1984. He is also a member of the Surf Hall of Fame and Swimming Hall of Fame.

Kahanamoku made its debut in 1925. He starred in films such as “Little Pony Express” (1925), Sunken Golden Island (1927), Port Girl (1930) and Mr. Roberts (1955). Kahanamoku was called a hero after rescuing eight men from a capsized ship in 1925. From 1932 to 1961, he served as the Sheriff of Honolulu for 13 consecutive terms.

Duke Kahanamoku died on January 22, 1968 at the age of 77. According to reports, the cause of his death was a heart attack. His body was cremated and his ashes were scattered in the sea. To commemorate him, a bronze statue was erected on Waikiki Beach in Honolulu. Kahanamoku married “Nadine Alexander” in 1940 until his death in 1968. The couple have no children.
