Doyle Brunson was born in Longworth, Texas in 1933 and has been a professional poker star for over 50 years. He grew up in a small town of about 100 people and was an all-state basketball player in Texas.
He attended Harding-Simons and was set to join the Minneapolis Lakers, but a knee injury ruined his career. After the injury, he honed his poker skills more seriously and earned a month’s salary in one game on his first day out of college. It didn’t take long for Brunson to quit sales to focus on poker full-time. Before his first trip to Vegas, he and his friends joined dozens of illegal games run by organized crime and lost everything. After that, Brunson parted ways with friends and started a solo career.
