His grandfather, Joseph Durst, founded the Durst Organization, and his father, Seymour, took over the family business in 1974.
Douglas is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley. In 1992, after his father retired, he took over the Durst organization. Durst hosted 4 Times Square in New York City, 601 West 57th Street Helena, 125 Epic West 31st Street, Bank of America Tower One Bryant Park. Durst also worked on the New College University Center and One World Trade Center. He serves on the board of the Public Land Trust, New Schools, Public Space Projects and the Roundabout Theatre Company. Durst also owns McEnroe Farm in north Manhattan. Douglas’ brother, Robert Durst, was charged with murder in 2001 but was acquitted. In January 2015, Douglas said of his brother Robert “there’s no question that if he had the chance to kill me, he would”.
