Douglas Steven Benson was born on July 2, 1962 in San Diego, California. He was raised in a Methodist family by a pharmacy clerk and a salesman. From an early age, Benson has struggled with vertigo and poor depth perception. In high school, Doug quickly became interested in theater and made his own 8mm movie with his friends. After graduation, he attended Grossmont College in El Cajon before moving to Los Angeles to pursue a career in acting.

Doug’s comedy career began when he dared to do stand-up comedy in Los Angeles. At his first gig, he got some laughs, which prompted him to start performing regularly as a stand-up comedian at the age of 22. While Benson is known today for his love of marijuana, it wasn’t until he actually started smoking it at the age of 28. In 2008, Doug Benson was the protagonist of the documentary “Higher Me”. Based on the general premise of the documentary “King of Me,” the film follows Doug’s 30 days without marijuana and then spending the next 30 days smoking as much as he can. At the end of the film, the effects of weed on Doug’s health are considered, and it is concluded that it does little harm to him. In 2009, Benson was involved in the so-called “red eye incident” with Fox News host Greg Gutfeld. Benson was Gutfeld’s guest on his show, where the host joked that the Canadian Armed Forces were “taking a break” after the 2011 mission in Afghanistan. Gutfeld said he “didn’t even know they were at war,” Benson added, adding that if “you don’t want a war,” Canada is the place to go. Gutfield then joked that now is the perfect time to invade Canada.
That part ultimately proved to be in bad taste, as four Canadian soldiers were killed in Afghanistan just days earlier. Furthermore, at the time Canada actually commanded NATO’s mission in Kandahar province, an area known for the heaviest fighting and highest casualty rates. Canada’s defense minister has demanded an apology from Fox for his remarks.
Benson’s comments about himself have had very real consequences. He was due to appear at a talk show event in Edmonton, Canada in 2009, but had to cancel his performance due to controversy. This is not a punishment for Doug, but for his own safety. The comedy club owner has received numerous threats from people who promised Benson would be harmed if he attended the event.
Later, Benson apologized for her comments, saying they were ignorant and “totally inappropriate.” He also vowed never to appear on the Greg Gutfield show again.
