Born in Pasadena, Texas, Donnie Dacus started playing guitar long before his 13th birthday. Soon after, he started teaching others how to play and formed his own local band, The Chantels.
They became The Shux and won the Battle of the Bands in Dallas. In 1968, The Yellow Payges spotted Dacus at a Buffalo Springfield and The Beach Boys concert.
