Reed’s career spanned more than 40 years, and she also appeared in more than 40 films. Her debut was in the 1941 films The Getaway, Shadow of the Thin Man and Babes on Broadway.
From 1958 to 1966, she appeared on television on The Donna Reed Show. From 1984 to 1985, Reed also played Miss Allie Ewing on the TV series “Dallas”. She played Mary Hatch in the 1946 film The Good Life and won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress as Lorene Burke in the 1953 film From Here to Eternity. Reed won the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Star in 1963. She succeeded Barbara Bel Guedes as Miss Allie Ewing in Dallas before suing the production company after Guedes was fired when Guedes decided to return to the show. She settled out of court for more than $1 million. Reed received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 1612 Vine Street in 1960. Donna Reed died of pancreatic cancer on January 14, 1986 at the age of 64.
