Donna Brazile is an American author, political analyst, educator, commentator and member of the Democratic Party. She was the interim chair of the 2016 Democratic National Committee (DNC). Basile was born on December 15, 1959 in Kenner, Louisiana. Her father, Lionel, is a military veteran, and her mother, Joan, is a domestic servant. She has 8 siblings. Brazile attended Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She graduated in 1981 with a degree in Industrial Psychology.

Brazilians become interested in politics at a young age. She grew up reading morning newspapers and often volunteers with local community projects. Basile’s donation to the King’s Foundation helped make Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday a federal holiday. Brazil volunteered for Jimmy Carter’s Democratic presidential campaign in 1976. She joined the Jesse Jackson campaign in 1984 and later served as Dick Gephardt’s field director in 1988. Brazile was appointed Chief of Staff and Press Secretary to Eleanor Holmes Norton in the 1990s.She was an adviser to Bill Clinton during the 1992 and 1996 presidential campaigns

Basile was Al Gore’s presidential campaign manager in 2000. She was the first African-American woman to run a major political party at the time. She later served on the Louisiana Recovery Authority Board of Directors from 2005 to 2009. Brazil is the co-founder and first executive director of the National Black Women’s Political Congress. She served as a super representative in the 2008 election. She was reappointed interim chair of the Democratic National Committee in 2011 and 2016.

In addition to politics, the Brazilian works as an educator at the University of Maryland, College Park. Her book Cooking with Fats was published by Simon & Schuster in 2004. She is a contributor to CNN’s Situation Room, American Morning, and New Day. Her TV credits also include The Good Wife and House of Cards.
