Don McGahn is a U.S. attorney, partner at Jones Day, and former federal election commissioner. In January 2017, he was named White House adviser to President Donald Trump. McGahn was born on June 16, 1969 in Atlantic City, New Jersey. He attended the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, and then the University of Notre Dame, Indiana. He graduated in 1991 with a BA in History and Computer Applications. McGahn received his Juris Doctor degree from Widener University School of Law in 1994. He also briefly studied at the Georgetown University Law Center.

McGahn practiced law at the international law firm of Patton Boggs in Washington, DC. From 1999 to 2008, he served as lead counsel to the National Republican Congressional Committee. He represented Congressman Tom DeLay again in 2003 and 2005. McGahn was nominated to the Federal Election Commission in 2008 under then-President George W. Bush. He held this position from July 2008 until his resignation in September 2013. During his tenure, McGahn oversaw some changes to campaign finance laws.

McGahn rejoined Barton Boggs in 2013 as a partner. He became a partner at Jones Day LLP in 2014. McGahn served as a campaign adviser during Donald Trump’s 2016 U.S. presidential campaign. Under the Trump administration, he was named a White House adviser. He was sworn in on January 20, 2017.
