Born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1931, Zimmer began playing professional baseball with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1949. He played for the Chicago Cubs until 1959 (returning a year in 1963), the New York Mets, the hometown Cincinnati Reds and the Washington Senators, before he went on to play as an infielder for the Chicago Cubs.
Zimmer was injured in a minor league game in 1953, leading Major League Baseball to require all players to wear batting helmets. Zimmer hit a .235 average over his 11-year career with 91 home runs and 352 field goals. After retiring, he coached the minors and then found work around the MLB, including shows with the Expos, Padres, Red Sox, Yankees and Rockies. He has managed the Padres, Red Sox, Rangers and Cubs at various stages of his career. Nicknamed “The Gerbil,” Zimmer was part of the coaching staff who won four World Series titles with the New York Yankees in the 1990s. He has written two books, “Zim’s Zen” and “Zim: A Life in Baseball.” He married his wife Carol Jean Bauerle at Home Plate in 1951. The high school couple lived in Florida until Zimmer died in June 2014 of heart and kidney problems.
