Don Williams is an American country singer, songwriter and guitarist. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2010. His recordings include 25 studio albums, 13 compilations and 21 hit singles. He also worked for a few years with the folk pop group Pozo-Seco Singers. Williams was born on May 27, 1939 in Floydada, Texas. His father was a mechanic and his mother played guitar. He grew up in Portland, Texas, and attended Gregory-Portland High School. He graduated in 1958.

Williams was drawn to music from an early age. He entered the competition at age 3 and won his first local talent competition. He started playing guitar when he was a teenager with the help of his mother. He has held several odd jobs, including a cashier, a van driver and a furniture retailer. He also served in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1959. Williams formed the Pozzo-Seco Singers in 1964. The other members are Lofton Klein and Susan Taylor. The Pozo-Seco singer released 5 studio albums and 12 singles. Their first 3 albums, Time (1966), I Can Be With You (1967) and Shadows of Time (1968), were released by Columbia Records. The band disbanded in 1969. The album “Follow Me Back to Louisville” was released in 2016 as Don Williams and The Pozo-Seco Singers.

Williams began his solo career in 1971. Before signing a recording contract with JMI Records, he was a songwriter at Jack Music Publishing. His debut album Don Williams Volume One was released in June 1973. It peaked at number five on the Top Country Albums chart. He gained early attention with the song “The Shelter of Your Eyes.” Williams’ first single, “If You Don’t Love Me, I Don’t Want to Live,” was released in 1974. Several subsequent hits included “I Believe In You” (1980) and “I Hope This Day Is Good” (1982). Williams worked with a number of record labels, including ABC/Dot Records, MCA Records, Capitol Records, RCA Nashville and Sugar Hill Records. He has released 25 studio albums, 13 compilations and 2 live albums. 21 of his 62 singles have reached number one on the Billboard Country chart. Williams was named “Male Artist of the Year” by the Country Music Association in 1978. In 1980, he was known in Europe as “Country Music Star of the Decade”. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in February 2010.

In addition to music, Williams also starred in several films. He played “Leroy” in WW and in Dixie Dancekings (1975) starring Burt Reynolds. He had a small role in Smokey and the Bandit II (1980) alongside Reynolds and Jackie Gleason. He also starred in the TV series “Possible Stories”, vol. 3.

Don Williams passed away on September 8, 2017 at the age of 78. According to his publicist, Kirt Webster, the cause of death was emphysema. Williams was married to “Joey Butcher” from April 1960 until his death. They have two sons, Gary and Tim. He is also survived by 4 grandchildren. Williams is about 6-foot-1 and is known for his soft bass-baritone vocals. He was nicknamed “The Gentle Giant”. His net worth is estimated at $1 million.
