Don Rickles is an American comedian and actor. He has appeared on “The Tonight Show,” “The Dean Martin Show,” and “The Late Late Show.” His film credits include Kelly’s Heroes (1970) and the “Toy Story” film series. Ricks was born Donald Jay Ricks on May 8, 1926 in Queens, New York. His parents are Eta and Max. He is an only child. Rickles attended Newtown High School and then the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. During World War II, he also served as a sailor in the U.S. Navy.

Rickles began his career in the entertainment industry as a stand-up comedian. He quickly gained a reputation for “insulting the comedian” due to his harsh response to questioners. His performance caught the attention of Frank Sinatra, who supported him throughout his fame. Rickles made his big-screen debut in the war film Run Silent, Run Deep (1958). The film was directed by Robert Wise and starred Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster. Other early films include The Rabbit Trap (1959) and The Rat Race (1960). He has also appeared in Beach Party Movies, Muscle Beach Parties, Bikini Beach, Pajama Parties and Beach Blanket Bingo.
Rickles began his television career with guest appearances on shows including The Thin Man, Twilight, The Addams Family and The Dick Van Dyke Show. In 1965, he made his debut on The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson. Rickles gained further exposure as a regular on The Dean Martin Show and The Dean Martin Celebrity Roast. His own variety show, The Don Rickles Show, premiered on ABC in 1972. Other notable TV shows include CPO Sharkey and Daddy Dearest.
Rickles’ debut comedy album, Hello, Dummy!, was released in 1968. He released “Don Rickles Speaks” in 1969. Both albums were nominated for Grammy Awards for Best Comedy Recording. Rickles played Sergeant “Crapgame” opposite Clint Eastwood in the film Kelly’s Hero (1970). He dubs the character “Mr.” Potato Head from the Toy Story movies. Rickles won a Primetime Emmy for the documentary “Mr. Warmth: The Don Rickles Project” (2007). In 2000, his star was inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
