Donald Harvey Franks is a Canadian actor, jazz musician and peace activist. He is best known for his roles in Kelly, Finian’s Rainbow and La Femme Nikita. Franks was born on February 28, 1932 in Burnaby, British Columbia. He was very athletic as a child. He enjoys a variety of sports, including football, lacrosse and rugby.

Franks started his career at a very young age. He works in vaudeville, plays music and works in the summer inventory. He appeared on Canadian radio station “CKMO” at the age of eleven. Franks later moved to Toronto. He worked on Broadway and was a singer on radio. In addition to vocals, he is proficient in trombone, drums and flute. He has performed in various jazz clubs including George’s Spaghetti House in Toronto and Village Vanguard in New York City. Popular records include “Jackie Gleason Says: There’s No One Like Don Franks in This World” and “Lost and Lonely”.
Franks debuted in 1954. His first television appearance was on the CBC TV show Burns Chuckwagon from Stampede Corral. 1959-1960 starring in the TV series “The Royal Mounted Police”. Franks played “Franklin Shepard” in the American Spy series Jericho. The show ran for 16 episodes on CBS from 1966 to 1967. He co-starred with Fred Astaire in the 1968 musical film Finian’s Rainbow. Other movies worth mentioning include the films Big Town, My Bloody Lover and the Mission: Impossible series as well as the Wild West. He received ACTRA awards for his performances in Dry Streets (1980) and Phoenix (1981). Francks also did voiceover work in the 1980s. He is known for hit shows like Inspector Gadget, My Dad the Rock Star and Rock and Rule. He was the first to play the Star Wars character “Boba Fett.”

Don Franks passed away on April 3, 2016 at the age of 84. His cause of death was reportedly lung cancer. He was survived by his second wife, Lili Francks, and his four children, Cree Summer, Rainbow Sun Francks, Trane and Tyler.
