He received USA TODAY High School All-American Honors at Rio Mesa High School in Oxnard, California. Dmitry was selected fourth overall by St. Louis.
The St. Louis Cardinals in the 1991 MLB amateur draft. In 1995, he was suspended for assaulting a fan. His first full season in the majors was with the Cardinals in 1997. Young was traded to the Cincinnati Reds after the season but was then selected by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the expansion draft. He was then traded back to the Reds. After the 2011 season, the Reds traded Dmitry Young to the Detroit Tigers, where he played until 2006. Young ended his career with the Washington Nationals from 2007 to 2008. During his career, he made two All-Star teams and was selected as the National Team’s 2007 League Comeback Player of the Year. His career was as an outfielder, first baseman and designated hitter. Young finished his career with a .292 batting average and 171 home runs. His younger brother is Major League Baseball player Delmon Young. After retiring, he became the Oakland County Cruisers’ vice president of baseball operations and senior advisor and special hitting and defensive coach.
