Dick Van Dyke is an American actor, comedian, writer and producer. He is best known for hosting the “Dick Van Dyke Show” and his roles in “Diagnosed Murder”, “Aunt Mary” and “Museum Night”. Van Dijk was born Richard Wayne Van Dijk on December 13, 1925 in West Plains, Missouri. His mother Hazel is a stenographer and his father Loren is a traveling salesman. His younger brother Jerry (died in 2018) is also an actor. Van Dijk grew up in Danville, Illinois, where he attended Danville High School. He is an active member of the school drama club.

Van Dyke enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. He served as a radio announcer in the special service team. After one year of service, he was discharged from hospital in 1945. Van Dyke started his entertainment career as a radio DJ and stage actor. His Broadway debut was “Girl vs. Boy” in 1959. He won the Tony Award for Best Actor in a stage musical “Goodbye Bird” in 1961. His stage credits also include musicians (1980) and Chita Rivera: The Dancer’s Life (2006)
Van Dyke played “Rob Petrie” in the CBS sitcom The Dick Van Dyke Show. The series aired 158 episodes from 1961 to 1966. Other well-known TV series include the New Dick Van Dyke Show (1971-74), the Carol Burnett Show (1977) and The Diagnosis of Murder (1993-2001). Van Dijk starred in the movie Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968) with Sally Ann Howes (Sally Ann Howes) as “Caractacus Potts”. He played the supporting role of “Cecil Fredricks” in the Museum Night series directed by Shawn Levy. Van Dijk’s film works also include Mary Poppins (1964) and Julie Andrews (Julie Andrews) and Dick Tracy (1990) and Warren Beatty.
Van Dijk has won multiple awards, including 5 Emmy Awards, a Grammy Award and a Tony Award. He was inducted into the TV Hall of Fame in 1995 and received the SAG Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013.
