Dick Gregory was an American civil rights activist, comedian, author and entrepreneur. He rose to fame in the 1960s with his stand-up comedy style. Later in his life, he ventured into the health and fitness industry. Gregory was born Richard Clarkston Gregory on October 12, 1932, in St. Louis, Missouri. He was raised by a single mother, Lucille. He has five siblings. Gregory attended Sumner High School, where he excelled in track and field. He continued his studies at Southern Illinois University on an athletic scholarship. He served in the US Army from 1954 to 1956.

Gregory began his career as a stand-up comedian while serving in the U.S. Army. He won several talent contests and was named to the Army Recreation Division. Shortly after being discharged from the hospital, he moved to Chicago, Illinois. Gregory is part of a new generation of black comedians that includes actors like Bill Cosby and Nipsey Russell. In 1961, he earned recognition by performing at Hugh Hefner’s Playboy Club in Chicago. His performance has earned him a Time Magazine profile and an appearance on the Tonight TV show starring Jack Parr. Through comedy, Gregory was able to target racism, poverty and segregation. His comedy albums include In Living Black and White (1961), Dick Gregory Talks Turkey (1962), The Light Side: The Dark Side (1969) and You Don’t Know Dick (2016).

Comedy aside, Gregory was at the forefront of the civil rights movement. He protested the Vietnam War and racial injustice. He was arrested several times for civil disobedience. During the 1960s, Gregory was associated with key figures such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Medgar Evers. In 1967, he ran unsuccessfully for mayor of Chicago. In 1968, he ran for president of the United States as a member of the Freedom and Peace Party. Gregory switched from comedy to focus on his political interests in the early 1970s. He later became a vegetarian and a health and fitness specialist. He built his business around what he called the “Bahamian Diet.” He attributes lower life expectancy in African Americans to poor diet and drug/alcohol abuse.

Gregory has written several books, including Niggers: An Autobiography (1964), No More Lies: Myths and Realities of American History (1971), Callus on My Soul ( 2000) and African American Humor (2002). He starred in the 1996 off-Broadway production of Dick Gregory Live!. His film credits include The Hot Chick (2002) with Rob Schneider, and Panther (1995) with Kadeem Hardison. In 2015, he was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
