In 1922, she received over a million fan letters. After earning so much money, she was poor and took a temporary job in the 1930s. Following her acting career, Peggy used her real name to become a writer and a silent film historian. She became an advocate for the rights of child actors. Her last acting role was as an extra in the 1938 film Having a Good Time. Cary has authored seven books. Century Studios burned down in 1926, and many of the Little Peggy films have not survived. On her 90th birthday, she was honored at the Edison Theater in Niles, California. In 2012, Turner Classics screened the documentary Baby Peggy: The Elephant in the Room. She was married to Robert Cary, who died in 2001, with whom she had a son.
