Derek Sanderson was born in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada in June 1946. Sanderson is a center who played junior hockey for the Ontario Hockey Association’s Niagara Falls Flyers.
In 1965, he turned pro and signed with the Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League. Sanderson also played for the Philadelphia Trail Blazers, New York Rangers, St. Louis Blues, Vancouver Canucks and Pittsburgh Penguins. During his career, he won the Memorial Cup in 1965. He won the 1967 OHA top scorer Eddie Powers Memorial Trophy, Calder Memorial Trophy and Prince of Wales Trophy. Sanderson won the Stanley Cup in 1970 and 1972. He received the Eddie Shore Trophy and the 7th Player Award in 1972. He made many bad investments in his career and lost millions of dollars. Sanderson battled substance abuse and ended up penniless, sleeping on a park bench. He entered rehab with the help of Bobby Orr. Sanderson is now the managing director of Boston Sports Group in Massachusetts.
