Early life and career start
Derek Hough was born in 1985 in a Latter-day Saint family in Salt Lake City, Utah, and is the fourth of five children. His parents are Marianne and Bruce, and his sisters are Sally, Malabeth, Catherine and Julianne. Hoff’s grandparents were both dancers. At the age of 12, when his parents were divorced, Hoff was sent to London to live and study with dance instructors Shirley and Corgi Barras. He spent ten years in London and received training in song, dance, drama and gymnastics at the Conti Academy of Dramatic Arts in Italy. Hough and his sister Julianne and Ballas’ son Mark formed the pop music trio 2B1G and continued to perform in dance competitions in the United Kingdom and the United States.
In 2002, Hough won the WDSF World Latin Championship. The following year, at the Blackpool Dance Festival, he won the Blackpool U-21 Latin Championship with Aneta Piotrowska.
“Dancing with the Stars”
Hoff made his first appearance in “Dancing with the Stars” in the fourth season of 2007. He played as a guest coach in the sixth week with his sister Julianne and professional speed skater Apollo Anton Ono. In the next season, Hoff joined the lineup of professional coaches and partnered with actress Jenny Gass. He finished fourth. In the sixth season, Hough collaborated with actress Shannon Elizabeth; they won sixth place. The next season achieved even greater success, when Hoff partnered with model and TV presenter Brooke Burke.
