Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters from South Africa is the model and beauty pageant champion. She became famous as the 2017 Miss Universe. Her previous title was Miss South Africa 2017. She has more than 140,000 followers on Instagram. Nel-Peters was born on June 28, 1995 in Sedgefield, South Africa. She has a half-sister, Franje, who is physically disabled. Her parents Bennie and Anne-Marie separated when she was very young. Nel-Peters studied at Northwestern University (NWU). Her major is business administration.

During NWU, Nel-Peters acted as a model for Vision Management Cape Town and Boss Models. Her first major event was Miss South Africa 2017. She defeated 11 other promising players in the final. Nel-Peters succeeded Natandoyenkosi Kunene as Miss South Africa on March 26, 2017. The runner-up and third runner-up are Ade van Heerden and Boipelo Mabe respectively.

Nel-Peters improved her status by competing and winning the 2017 Miss Universe title. This is her first visit to the United States. The 66th Miss Universe Pageant was held on November 26, 2017 in Las Vegas, Nevada. It is hosted by Steve Harvey and Ashley Graham. Nel-Peters succeeded Iris Mittenaere of France to win the 2017 Miss Universe crown. Her victory also marked South Africa’s first title since Margaret Gardiner in 1978. Laura Gonzalez of Colombia finished second, and Davina Bennett of Jamaica finished third.

While serving as Miss Universe, Nell Peters visited Egypt, Mexico, France, India and other countries. She advocates equal pay for equal work for women in the workplace. After an attempted carjacking in Hyde Park, Johannesburg, she also opened a self-defense seminar (unbreakable movement) for women. Nel-Peters was replaced by Catriona Gray of the Philippines in December 2018.
