Delaris is an American gospel singer, actor, TV presenter and appointed pastor. She played “Tess” in the CBS TV series “Angel Moved” and hosted the talk show “Dela”. Her film works include Harlem Night (1989), The Thin Line Between Love and Hate (1996) and Expecting Mary (2010). Her record includes the singles “Don’t you know?” and “This reminds me”. Reese was born on July 6, 1931 in Detroit, Michigan, originally named Delloreese Patricia Early. Her father Richard is a factory worker, and her mother Nellie is a cook. She has five older brothers and sisters. Reese attended Cass Technical High School, followed by Wayne State University. She majored in psychology, but had to drop out of school to support her family.

Reese began singing in the local church choir at the age of 6. As for acting, she grew up watching actresses like Betty Davis and Joan Crawford. She gained early exposure as a singer/performer in Maharia Jackson’s Gospel Tour Choir. Reese formed the all-female gospel group “Meditation Singer” in the late 1940s. In 1953, she signed her first recording contract with Jubilee Records. Her first studio album Melancholy Baby was released in 1957. She has released 4 more albums on Jubilee label Amen! (1958), which reminds me of (1959), how much do you know about love? (1959) and the story of the blues (1959). Reese works with other record companies such as RCA Records, Avco Embassy and Spiritual Icon. Her 1959 single “Don’t you know?” ranked No. 2 on the bulletin board charts. This earned her a nomination for best female singer at the Grammy Awards. Other outstanding records include “And That Reminds Me”, “Not One Minute More” and “Someday (You’ll Want Me to Want You)”.
From 1969 to 1970, Reese hosted her own variety talk show “Dela”. It played 197 episodes before it was cancelled. In 1970, she guest-hosted the Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson. She appeared in two episodes of the police series McLeod (1974-76). Reese played the role of “Dela Rogers” repeatedly in the NBC sitcom Chico and the Man (1975-78). She then appeared in Love Boat, Need Two People, Charlie’s Company, and the Royal Family. Reese played “Tess” in the CBS TV series “Angel Moved” (1994-2003). The show was created by John Masius and starred by Roma Downey and John Dye. Her performance earned her 2 Primetime Emmy Awards, 2 Screen Actors Guild Awards and a Golden Globe nomination. Reese starred in “Vera” with Eddie Murphy and Richard Pryor in Harlem Nights (1989). Her film works include Dinosaur (2000) with Alfre Woodard, Beauty Shop (2005) with Queen Latifah and Expectant Mary (2010) with Elliott Gould.
