Dean Winters was born Dean Gerard Winters on July 20, 1964 in New York City. He grew up on Long Island with his mother Magna, father Patrick, sister Blair and brothers Scott and Bradford. As a teenager, Dean lived in Scottsdale, Arizona, and attended Chaparral High School and the Jesuit school Brophy College Prep. After graduating in 1982, Winters attended Colorado College to study English, earning his degree in 1986. After college, Dean traveled the world, studying art history in Florence, Italy and London, England, before moving to New York, where his brother Scott is still alive. Scott persuaded Dean to take acting lessons with him, and while the brothers worked as bartenders together, they became friends with Tom Fontana, who later wrote the HBO series Oz Let both brothers take part in the show.

In June 2009, Dean died in an ambulance in New York City for nearly five minutes. He told Us Weekly, “I had an illness when I was a kid and I had suppuration. I died in the back of the ambulance and the great doctors at Lenox Hill Hospital brought me back to life about four and a half minutes later. ” Winters suffered a cardiac arrest in an ambulance and spent the next three weeks in the hospital’s intensive care unit before spending a month recuperating at home.
