Born on September 7, 1946 in Hannover, Germany, he made his fortune as the founder of the private pharmacy chain Dirk Rossmann GmbH. In 1972, at the age of 25, Rothman opened the first self-service pharmacy in Germany.
Since then, the company has turned into an empire with 2,775 stores in six European countries, including Germany, Hungary, Albania, Poland, the Czech Republic and Turkey. And, in 2012, Reich made a profit of $7.9 billion and is now the second-largest pharmaceutical chain in Germany. Currently, Rossmann owns 60% of the company, as in the 80s he sold 40% to Hanover Finanz and later (2004) to Hutchison Whampoa, owned by Hong Kong billionaire Li Ka-shing. His sons Raoul and Daniel also work for the family business. In addition to the pharmacy chain, Rossmann owns a 25 percent stake in German private equity firm Deutsche Beteiligungs AG (DBAG), a stake worth about $95 million.
