early life
David Wayne Spade was born on July 22, 1964 in Judith and Warne Spade in Birmingham, Michigan. He has two brothers, Andy and Brian. When Sped was four years old, the family moved to Scottsdale, Arizona, and soon his parents divorced. The brothers were mainly raised by their mother in some poverty. David graduated from Saguaro High School, then attended Scottsdale Community College, followed by Arizona State University. As a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Brotherhood, he graduated with a degree in business in 1986. This university has a short comedy show called Farce Side Comedy hour, in which Spade often performs. He also did stand-up comedy at Greasy Tony’s Pizza in Tempe, Arizona throughout his college years.
His brother Andy Spade eventually co-founded the extremely successful handbag company Kate Spade with his wife Kate, who tragically ended his life in 2018.

Saturday night live
Spade moved to Los Angeles and continued to do stand ups. In 1989, when comedian Dennis Miller helped David find a job in “Saturday Night Live”, he made a major breakthrough. He started as a writer and later became an actor. His particularly ironic style of humor made many of his sketches immediately classics, especially when working with other actors and friends, Chris Farley. The two had such excellent chemistry in unforgettable repetitive sketches such as Gap Girls and Matt Foley that SNL producer Lorne Michaels had the idea of pairing the two on the big screen. Therefore, Michaels conceived and produced “Tommy Boy” in 1995, with Farley playing the cute irresponsible fool and Spade playing the “straight man”. In 1996, the two teamed up again to star in “Black Sheep”, which was largely the same. These films received lukewarm criticism, but they became box office hits and classics among SNL fans. Farley’s death from an overdose in 1997 was devastating for the actor, so that he could not attend his funeral, sparking rumors that there might be discord between them. Spade stated in multiple interviews that seeing his close friend “in a box” he couldn’t deal with it emotionally.

In 1997, he played a role in the NBC office comedy “Just Shoot Me”, which lasted until 2003. Around the same time, he dubbed “Beavis and Butthead” and produced his own TV series “Sammy”. After the death of John Ritter in 2004, he joined the cast of “8 Simple Rules” in the final season of the show. Beginning in 2005, he hosted the “David Spade Show in the Comedy Center” for three seasons, in which he mocked Hollywood and celebrities and returned to his “Hollywood One Minute” sketch on Saturday Night Live .

During his time at SNL, David was nominated for three Emmy Awards for Outstanding Writing in Variety Shows or Music Programs. He was nominated for an Emmy and two Golden Globes for playing Dennis Finch’s “Just Shoot Me”. In September 2003, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

He has never been married.
On November 29, 2000, Spade was attacked by his assistant while he was sleeping. David Warren “Skippy” Malloy attacked Spade with a stun gun after breaking into his home early in the morning. Spade managed to get rid of Malloy and locked himself in the bathroom with a shotgun until the police arrived. Malloy pleaded guilty and avoided jail. He received a five-year probation, mandatory drug and psychological counseling, and was ordered to stay at least 100 yards away from Spade. He received 480 hours of community service.
Spade donated $100,000 to the Phoenix Police Department in December 2005. He donated US$200,000 to tornado victims in Oklahoma in May 2013. Other important donations include the $100,000 challenge to the ALS ice bucket in 2014, and the $100,000 donated to the National Alliance after his Mental Illness for the tragic suicide of his sister-in-law.
David lives in Beverly Hills, California, and his home was stolen in June 2017.
