David Rockefeller is an American banker, philanthropist, and the youngest son of the late John D. Rockefeller Jr. He was born on June 12, 1915 in Manhattan, New York. He has five older brothers and sisters. Rockefeller completed his undergraduate degree at Harvard University in 1936, and then received his doctorate from the University of Chicago (1940).

Rockefeller began his career as the secretary of New York City Mayor Fiorello H. LaGuardia. During World War II, he served in the US Army in North Africa and France. In 1945, he was discharged with the rank of captain. Rockefeller joined Chase National Bank in 1946. His position continued to climb, and by 1952 he was appointed senior vice president. He specializes in international banking and helped facilitate the merger of Chase National Bank and Manhattan Bank Corporation. This led to Chase Manhattan Bank.
Rockefeller was appointed Chairman and CEO of Chase in the late 1960s. He retired from active management in 1981. He served as chairman until 1999. Outside of the banking industry, Rockefeller is known for his philanthropy. He is a member of the Rockefeller Institute of Medicine. He donated millions of dollars to the Museum of Modern Art in New York and his alma mater Harvard University. He has served as a trustee of the University of Chicago and a supervisor of Harvard University. In 1998, President Bill Clinton awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
