David Petraeus served as Director of the Central Intelligence Agency from September 6, 2011 until his resignation on November 9, 2012. He was born on November 7, 1952 in Cornwall, Hudson, New York.
He attended West Point Military Academy and graduated in the top 5% of his class. He is remembered as always “fighting for it” in sports, academics, leadership and social life. After graduating from West Point in 1974, he was commissioned as an infantry officer and went on to complete his studies at Ranger School. He served in the U.S. Army for 37 years, and before becoming director of the CIA, Petraeus was a decorated four-star general. Two months after graduating from West Point, Petraeus married Hollister “Holly” Knowlton, the daughter of the president of West Point when Petraeus was in school. Holly is multilingual, was a National Merit Scholar in high school, and graduated summa cum laude from Dickinson College. They have a daughter and a son, Anne and Stephen. His last assignment in the Army was from July 4, 2010 to July 18, 2011 as Commander of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) and Commander of the United States Forces in Afghanistan (USFOR-A). His other four-star assignments include serving as the 10th commander of U.S. Central Command and as commander of the Multinational Force in Iraq. While in Iraq, Petraeus oversaw all coalition forces. In 2011, Petraeus was unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate as the next CIA Director and retired from the U.S. Army in August 2011. Just a year later, in 2012, General Petraeus resigned as director of the CIA, citing an extramarital affair. This was reportedly discovered during an FBI investigation.

Boylan, when Petraeus ceased to be an active-duty officer in late 2011, he began working with his biography, All Out: The Great Paula Broadwell, lead author of The Education of General David Petraeus, had an affair. Petraeus reportedly ended the relationship in the summer of 2012, when he learned that Broadwell had been sending harassing emails to Petraeus’ longtime family friend Jill Kelly. Evidently, Broadwell was concerned that Petraeus’ eyes would turn to the Tampa socialite, so she sent a series of anonymous threatening emails to express her concerns. After the scandal, Petraeus found a home in academia and held faculty positions at the University of Southern California, the City University of New York and Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. He is also busy in various professional advisory roles, including serving as chairman of the investment firm KKR Global Institute.
