David Petraeus is a U.S. military officer and retired four-star U.S. Army General. From 2011 to 2012, he served as Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). David Howell Petraeus was born on November 7, 1952, in Cornwall-on-Hudson, New York. His mother Miriam was a librarian and his father Sixtus was a captain. Petraeus attended Cornwall Central High School and then West Point Military Academy. He completed his bachelor’s degree in 1974. Petraeus graduated from the U.S. Army Command and Staff College in 1983. He received his MPA (1985) and Ph.D. (1987) from Woodrow Wilson School, Princeton University.

Petraeus joined the infantry after graduating from West Point in 1974. He trained for a few weeks at the Ranger School. He served with the 509th Airborne Battalion Combat Team and later with the 24th Infantry Division. Petraeus earned the rank of captain in the 1980s and was promoted to lieutenant colonel in 1991. He commanded the 187th Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division from 1991 to 1993. Petraeus was promoted to brigadier general in 2000. He was a member of the NATO Stabilization Force in Bosnia. He was awarded the rank of general in 2007.
Petraeus was selected by President George W. Bush in 2007 to lead the US multinational force in Iraq. He served as Commander of U.S. Central Command (2008-10) and later as Commander of the International Security Assistance Force (2010-11). Petraeus was appointed CIA director in 2011 by President Barack Obama. He held the office from 6 September 2011 until his resignation on 9 November 2012. Pedraus is a potential choice for secretary of state under Donald Trump’s reign.

Petraeus had an extramarital affair with author Paula Broadwell back in 2012. As a result, he resigned as director of the CIA. He was sentenced to two years of probation in 2015 after admitting to sharing classified government information with Broadwell.
