early life
David Edward Kelley was born in Waterville, Maine in April 1956. His father, Jack Kelley, is a member of the American Hockey Hall of Fame. He grew up in Belmont, Massachusetts and attended Belmont High School. After graduating from high school, he entered Princeton University and received a bachelor’s degree in political science. In his graduation thesis, he turned the “Bill of Rights” into a drama. Each correction is a character. After graduating from Princeton University, he received a Juris Doctor degree from Boston University School of Law. While in law school, he wrote for a legal-themed comedy team called “Legal Follies”. After graduating from law school, he went to work in a law firm in Boston, where he handled real estate and minor criminal cases.
In 1983, 27-year-old Kelly began writing a legal thriller as a hobby. He adapted this story into a screenplay chosen by the filmmakers, which eventually became the 1987 Judd Nelson film “From the Hips”.

In 1986, producer Steven Bochco was looking for smart young legal writers for his new NBC series called “LA Law”. After reading David’s From the Hip script, Bochco offered him a screenwriting job for the series. David did not quit his legal job at first, worrying that his involvement in television writing would not continue.
By the second season of the show, David was promoted to story editor and co-producer. By 1989, he was appointed as executive producer. For his work in LA Law Kelley, he won two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Writing in Drama Series.
In 1992, Bochco and Kelley co-authored “Dougie Houser, MD”. In the same year, they co-founded David E. Kelley Productions and soon reached an agreement with CBS Television.
The first series created by David E. Kelley Productions was “Picket Fences”, which aired 88 episodes in four seasons. Picket Fences has won 14 Emmy Awards.
In 1994, he created the CBS series “Chicago Hope”, which eventually aired 141 episodes in six seasons.

David began dating actress Michelle Pfeiffer in January 1993 after a blind date. Before meeting with David, Michelle had already started the legal adoption process. After dating for two months, Michelle adopted a newborn girl, Claudia Rose. David and Michelle got married in November 1993. In August 1994, Michelle gave birth to a son named John Henry.
