He earned a bachelor’s degree and an MBA from Cornell University in Duffield and subsequently founded two mainframe application software companies, Integral Systems (the first to offer a DB2-based human resources and accounting system) and Information Associates (a specialized companies engaged in higher education market applications).
He next worked at IBM as a marketing representative and systems engineer before founding PeopleSoft in 1987. Under Duffield’s guidance as CEO and Chairman of the Board, PeopleSoft grew to become the second largest application software company in the world. After being acquired by Oracle for $10 billion in January 2005, Duffield briefly quit the software industry and returned to work a few months later. In March 2005, David Duffield founded Workday in partnership with Aneel Bhusri, former PeopleSoft vice chairman and head of product strategy. This is a company that provides financial management and human capital management software. Duffield remains co-CEO with Bhusri, who is also an avid philanthropist.
