He played college baseball and basketball with the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers. Winfield made his Major League Baseball debut for the San Diego Padres on June 19, 1973.
He played with the Padres until 1980 and was a member of the New York Yankees from 1981 to 1990. Winfield later played for the California Angels from 1990 to 1991, the Toronto Blue Jays in 1992, the Minnesota Twins from 1993 to 1994, and, finally, the Cleveland Indians in 1995. Winfield, a right-handed outfielder, last appeared with the Indians on October 1, 1995. From 1977 to 1988, he was a twelve-time MLB All-Star. Winfield won seven Gold Gloves and six Silver Bars. In 1990, he was awarded the American League Comeback Player of the Year honor. Four years later, he received the Roberto Clemente Award. Winfield finished his career with a .283 batting average while hitting 3,110 hits, 465 home runs and over 1,800 at-bats. The Padres retired his No. 31 jersey. He was inducted into the College Baseball Hall of Fame and was a first-choice member of the Baseball Hall of Fame. After retirement, he worked as a studio analyst for several networks including Fox and ESPN. Winfield created the David M. Winfield Foundation.
