He played for Blackburn Rovers in the 1956-60 season, scoring 3 goals in his career. Whelan broke his leg in the FA Cup final against Wolverhampton Wanderers and was sold to Crewe Alexandra Football Club, where he played until 1966.

After playing, he opened a chain of supermarkets called Whelan’s Discount Stores, which eventually sold for over £1 million.
