early life
David John Matthews was born on January 9, 1967 in Johannesburg, South Africa. He is the third of the four children of John and Val Matthews. When Dave was two years old, his family moved to Yorktown Heights in Westchester County, New York for his father’s job as a physicist at IBM. In 1974, the Matthews family moved to Cambridge, England for one year. After that, the Matthews family moved back to New York. Dave’s father died of lung cancer in 1977. After that, the family moved back to Johannesburg. Dave graduated from Damelin College High School in South Africa in 1985 and moved back to the United States to avoid enlistment. Dave moved to New York in 1986 and worked for IBM for a short time. In the same year, he moved to Charlottesville, Virginia, where his mother lived.
Dave taught himself to play guitar when he was nine years old, but he didn’t start performing publicly until he moved to Charlottesville. A mutual friend introduced Dave to local guitar legend Tim Reynolds. The two began to perform together, and eventually, Reynolds persuaded Dave to record some of his own songs. In 1991, Matthews had the idea of forming his own band. During this time, he bartended at the Miller Bar in Charlottesville.

Dave co-founded the Dave Matthews band in early 1991 with saxophonist LeRoi Moore, drummer Carter Beauford, bassist Stefan Lessard, violinist Boyd Tinsley, and keyboardist Peter Griesar (who left the band in 1993). The first performance of the Dave Matthews band was on March 14, 1991, at the Trax nightclub in Charlottesville. The band released the first EP “Recently” in 1994. The five tracks of the live album were taken from performances at Trax in Birch Mill and Charlottesville in Alexandria, Virginia.
On September 20, 1994, DMB released its first studio album “Under the Table and Dreaming”. This album brought the band its first commercial hits “What would You Say”, “Satellite” and “Ants Marching”. “Under the Table and Dreaming” made the band famous all over the world, and finally received six platinum certifications. “Under the Table and Dreaming” and its follow-up album “Crash” brought the band a Grammy Award and four other Grammy nominations. Crash’s hits include “Crash into Me”, “Too Much” and “Tripping Billies”.
Their third album “Before these Crowded Streets” was released in April 1998 and was an immediate commercial success, selling more than 900,000 albums worldwide in the first week. Their fourth studio album “Everyday” was released in February 2001 and was a huge commercial success. Since then, the band has released albums “Busted Stuff”, “Big Whisky and the Groo Grux King”, “Away From The World” and “Come Tomorrow”. The 2018 release of “Come Tomorrow” ranked No. 1 on the Billboard 200, making DMB the first band to debut seven consecutive studio albums.

Acting career
Dave Matthews started performing before forming the band. In the early 1990s, he appeared in many works in Charlottesville’s understage theater and live art theater.
In 2005, Dave played the role of Otis, a man working in a pet shop, in the movie “Because Win-Dixie”. In 2007, he played a gay salesman in “I Miss You Chuck and Larry Now”. In the same year, Matthews played a piano music genius in the Fox TV show “The House”. In 2008, he played a racist hillbilly in “Don’t mess with Zuohan.” He also starred in “Lake City” with Sisi Spicer. In January 1994, Matthews’ sister Anne, who lived in South Africa, was murdered by her husband, who subsequently committed suicide on or about January 27 of that year. This event had a profound impact on Matthews’ outlook on life and was mentioned in some of his songs. Anne Matthews (Anne Matthews)’s two children survived, and she went to the United States after her death, where Dave and his sister Jane were in charge of raising them.
His sister Jane has the same name as the DMB song “Jane’s Favorite Song”.
Dave Matthews married long-time girlfriend Ashley Harper in 2000. They have twin daughters, Stella and Grace, who were born on August 15, 2001, and a son, August, who was born on June 19, 2007.
Matthews composed the song “Grace is Gone” in the late 90s and recorded them as part of an abandoned album called Lilywhite Sessions (named after producer Steve Lily White) by fans, and later in Busted in 2002 Released in Stuff.
