Darwyn Cooke is a Canadian cartoonist, comics writer and animator. He is best known for his work on DC superhero characters and dark crime stories. Cook was born on November 16, 1962 in Toronto, Canada. Some of his popular credits include Batman/Spirit, DC: New Frontier and Richard Stark’s Parker: The Huntsman. He received the Josh Shuster Award in 2007, followed by the Eisner Award in 2015.
Profession
Cook began his career as a professional comic book artist in the 1980s. Due to financial difficulties, he was forced to leave the comics industry. He survived by serving as an art director, graphic and product designer. He would eventually return to comics in the 1990s. Cook took a job as a storyboard artist at Warner Bros. after responding to an ad released by animator Bruce Tim. He has worked on animated series for Batman and Superman. He later directed the Men in Black series for Sony.
Cook’s graphic novel Batman: Self was published by DC Comics in 2000. The following year, he revamped the character of Catwoman with Ed Brubaker. In addition to DC, Cook has contributed to several projects at Marvel and IDW Publishing. He rose to fame in 2004 with the miniseries DC: New Frontiers. Set in the 1950s, the series features Golden Age characters (Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman) and Silver Age characters (The Flash, Green Lantern and Martian Manhunter).
