He played college golf at Wake Forest University and turned pro in 1990. In 1993, he won his first European Tour title, finishing first at the Alfred Dunhill Open in Belgium and eventually finishing eighth in the Medal of Merit, the highest paid player on the European Tour one.
The following year, Clark played in his first U.S. Open, though he failed to make the cut. Clark won his second European Tour title at the Linde German Masters in 1996 and continued to improve steadily, winning at least one European Tour each year from 1998 to 2003, including his 2000 Andersen Consulting First PGA Tour title in a match play tournament. Clark won the BMW Asia Open in 2008 after nearly five years without winning any championships. In 2011, after 20 attempts to win the Claret Jug, he finally won his first and only PGA Tour major at the 2011 Open. He dedicated the victory to his two sons and his late wife, who died of breast cancer in 2006. Clark also played five consecutive Ryder Cup teams, from 1997 to 2006.
