Born on March 17, 1959, in Eugene, Oregon, Daniel Ray Ainge is currently the president of basketball operations for the Boston Celtics. A brilliant high school athlete, Ainge was one of the rising NBA players who, along with Joe Dumars, led North Eugene High to two consecutive state basketball championships in 1976-77, both years Statewide honor.
Danny Ainge was also named to the 1977 Parade High School All-American and went on to play basketball at Brigham Young University. There, he received the John Wooden Award for college basketball player of the year. But at the same time, he entered the major leagues with the Blue Jays of Major League Baseball, who had already selected him in the 1977 baseball draft. When Ainge was selected by the Boston Celtics in the NBA draft, they first had to buy out his contract from the Blue Jays, resulting in a legal battle over Ainge’s contract rights.
