Born in 1959, he is the grandson of Abram Nicholas Pritzker, founder of the Hyatt hotel chain. He currently lives in Kentfield, California, with his wife, Karen, and both are currently trustees of the Jay Pritzker Foundation, a charitable fund that sponsors the prestigious annual Pritzker Architecture Prize, among others.
Daniel Pritzker graduated from Tufts University in 1981 and received his Juris Doctor degree from Northwestern University School of Law in 1986. The descendants of the Pritzker family went on to found the Chicago band Sonia Dada, where they serve as songwriter and guitarist. The band began performing at subway stations in 1990.
An avid jazz lover, Daniel has released a silent biopic depicting the life and times of jazz great Louis Armstrong. Bolden, is the next jazz-filled movie he’s currently working on. The film is an ode to Buddy Bolden, a longtime New Orleans-based ragtime innovator. Daniel and his wife Karen have five children and are members of Judaism. Daniel is also a distinguished benefactor to his alma mater, Tufts University and St. Mel’s High School in Chicago. He established the Jay Pritzker Academy in the Ta Chet area of Cambodia. Until 2008, Daniel and his family held a controlling stake in industrial conglomerate Marmon, which was eventually sold to Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway for $4.8 billion.
