Danelle Umstead is an American alpine skier and a member of the United States Paralympic Team. She participated in the 2010 Vancouver Winter Paralympics, the 2014 Sochi Winter Paralympics and the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Paralympics. Her husband Rob Umstead is her guide for good eyesight. Known as “Team Vision4Gold”, they won 3 Paralympic bronze medals and 4 World Championship titles. Danelle D’Aquanni was born on February 15, 1972 in Des Plaines, Illinois. She has two sisters, Michelle and Nicole. Her mother died of cancer in 1999. Her father’s name is Peter. Danelle has impaired vision (retinitis pigmentosa). She attended Plano High School and graduated in 1990.

Danelle was 29 years old when she came into contact with adaptive skiing under the introduction of her father. He served as her first guide. Danelle met her future husband Rob Umstead while skiing in New Mexico in 2005. Rob served as her vision guide in 2008. The two are called “Team Vision4Gold”. Danelle and Rob made their Paralympic debut at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Paralympics. They participated in 5 projects and won bronze medals for “Downhill” and “Super Combo”. The two won bronze medals in the “Super Combo” competition at the Sochi Winter Paralympic Games in 2014. They returned to the competition in the 2018 PyeongChang competition, ranking 6th in the “Super G” and 8th in the “Super Combo” and “Giant Slalom”. In addition to the Paralympics, the Vision4Gold team also won 4 world championship medals (2 silver medals, 2 bronze medals) and more than 50 alpine skiing World Cup medals.

Danelle was named the 2011 Best Adaptive Athlete of the Year by the American Ski and Snowboard Association. Her previous honors include the 2010 Best Athlete Award from the National Disabled Sports Center. Outside of skiing, Danelle is an inspirational speaker. She shared her story and served as a mentor for junior disabled athletes. Danelle was selected as a celebrity contestant in the 27th season of ABC Dancing with the Stars. Her professional partner is Latin dancer Artem Chigvintsev.

Danelle Umstead is 5 feet 2 inches tall. She was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa when she was 13 years old. This condition can cause the retina to gradually degenerate and lead to total blindness. She also suffers from multiple sclerosis. Danelle married “Rob Umstead” in 2008. Rob is a former college skier at the University of Massachusetts. The couple welcomed their son Brockton in 2008. They currently live in Park City, Utah.
