Danai Gurira is an American actress, playwright and model. She played “Michonne” on the “Walking Dead” TV series. Her film credits include The Visitor and George’s Mother. She wrote the 2009 Tony Award-winning play Eclipsed. Gurira was born to parents Josephine and Roger on February 14, 1978, in Grinnell, Iowa. She has three older siblings, Shinai, Chiwoniso and Tare. In 1983, shortly after Zimbabwe gained independence, Gurira and her family moved to Harare, Zimbabwe. She attended Dominican Convent High School in Harare. After returning to the United States, Gurira attended Macalester College, followed by New York University. She holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s degree in performing arts, respectively.

Gurira achieved early success as a stage actor and playwright. She co-wrote and starred in “Abigail” in the 2005 off-Broadway play “Continuum.” Her contributions have won the Obie Award and the Helen Hayes Award. Gurira made her Broadway debut in August Wilson’s 2009 play Joe Turner’s Come and Go. Her 2009 play “Eclipsed” premiered on Broadway outside the Public Theater in 2015. It was moved to Broadway the following year. Eclipsed won the Tony Award for Best Dramatic Costume Design.

Gurira made her television debut in the 2004 episode of Law & Order: Criminal Intent. She played the role of “Jill” repeatedly in the TV series “Treme” (2010-11). Her feature film debut was The Visitor (2007) by Richard Jenkins. She collaborated with Isaach de Bankole in the Nigerian drama “George’s Mother” in 2013. Gurira voiced the character Fury in the animated film The Tale of Tinkerbell and the Never Beast (2015). She played the political activist “Afeni Shakur” in the biopic “All Eyez on Me” (2017).

In 2012, Gurira played “Michonne” in the AMC horror series “The Walking Dead.” She has been part of the main cast since Season 3. In 2016, she was nominated for the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. The show also stars Andrew Lincoln, Chandler Riggs, Josh McDermitt and Steven Yeun.
