Dan Stevens is an English film, television and theatre actor. He is known for the films Beauty and the Beast (2017), The Guest (2014) and the TV series Downton Abbey. Stevens was born Daniel Jonathan Stevens on October 10, 1982 in London, England. He was raised by adoptive parents. Stevens attended Tonbridge School in Kent, followed by Emmanuel College, Cambridge. He majored in English Literature. He also trained at the National Youth Theatre in London.

Stevens made his professional debut as “Orlando” in Shakespeare’s “As You Wish” in 2004. His performance earned him an Ian Charlesson Award nomination. He was chosen by theatre director Peter Hall for the role. Stevens has since performed at venues including the Theatre Royal in Bath, London’s Apollo Theatre and London’s Old Vic Theatre. His stage credits include You Never Can Tell (2005), Hay Fever (2006) and The Vortex (2008). He played “Morris Townsend” in the 2012 Broadway production of “The Heiress.”
Stevens made her television debut in the miniseries Frankenstein (2004). He played “Arthur Homewood” in the TV movie “Dracula” (2006). Other early TV shows include Agatha Christie’s Marple (2007) and Sense and Sensibility (2008). Stevens co-starred in “Matthew Crawley” on the ITV series Downton Abbey (2010-12). The role earned him a Screen Actors Guild Award for his work on TV. He is currently playing “David Haller” in the FX series Legion. The show, which premiered on February 8, 2017, is based on Marvel Comics.
Stevens played “The Beast” with Emma Watson in Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” (2017). The film is directed by Bill Condon and stars Luke Evans and Kevin Kline. Before that, Stevens played “David Collins” in the horror thriller “Guest” (2014). Other notable films include Tombstone Walk (2014) with Liam Neeson and Night at the Museum: Secrets of the Grave (2014) with Ben Stiller. His upcoming projects include Marshall and The Man Who Invented Christmas. In addition to the movies, Stevens has narrated several audiobooks, including War Horse and Casino Royale. He was a judge for the 2012 Man Booker Prize for Fiction.
